Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mats Hummels has suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury.

The defender, who joined the club on a free transfer from Bayern Munich last summer, underwent surgery in June to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

Hummels had initially been expected to be sidelined for six months, but he returned to training earlier this month and was hoping to make a comeback during the winter break.

However, he has now tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss out on the remainder of the season as a result.

The club said: "We can confirm that Mats Hummels is currently self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19. The player has undergone a PCR test and we expect him to undergo further tests in the coming days."

Hummels has made 44 appearances for Borussia Dortmund since joining from Bayern Munich in August 2021, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

He has also played for Germany at international level, making 56 appearances for his country since 2015.

His injury is a major blow for Borussia Dortmund, who are currently fifth in the Bundesliga table with just one win in their last seven matches.

They face relegation if they do not improve their form soon, and Hummels' absence could further hinder their chances of survival.

But the club remains hopeful that he will recover fully and return to action in the future.
